DEBT CHALLENGES IN PACIFIC ISLAND COUNTRIES AND RESOLUTION OPTIONS (2022)

DEBT CHALLENGES IN PACIFIC ISLAND COUNTRIES AND RESOLUTION OPTIONS (2022)

Pacific countries are currently facing two interrelated challenges. First, a regional debt crisis that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, and second, the increasing impacts of the climate emergency.

In the context of these two challenges, in July 2021 the Pacific Islands Forum announced its intention to hold a regional debt conference. The conference is due to take place between 5 and 8 of April 2022 in Suva, Fiji.

The purpose of this paper, co-authored by Eurodad, Jubilee Australia, Jubilee Debt Campaign UK and Erlassjahr.de, is to raise awareness of the imminent debt and climate crises in the Pacific, and to inform the policy debates and discussions for those who will be attending the conference, particularly the Pacific countries that are facing these twin crises.
