EU fails to deliver on climate finance at Africa Summit

Nelia and her family family faced severe food shortages as a result of droughts in the Makoni District of Zimbabwe

Responding to the outcome of the sixth European Union – African Union Summit, Zakaria Sambakhe, Country Director of ActionAid Senegal, says:

“African countries are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. We expected a clear commitment from the EU to finally deliver on previous pledges of climate finance.

“But again, the leaders of the nations most responsible for our warming world, have failed to deliver specifics, with a package focused on private finance and loans, which risks pushing countries further into heavy debt and poverty.

“Across our continent, communities are facing devastating droughts, rising sea levels and flooding. Real finance, delivered through grants, is urgently needed to support people to adapt and recover from climate disasters.”

Ends.
