Between October 10-17, hundreds upon hundreds around the world stood together for justice & debt cancellation — debt cancellation that is urgently needed for peoples to face the multiple crises.

  • DESCRIPTION
Right now, 54 countries are in debt crisis. This is not an accident.

For centuries, powerful governments, institutions and corporations have used debt to control and plunder the resources of countries in the global south for their own gain.

But this is often left out of discussions on global south debt.

Instead, the issue is repeatedly presented as technical at best, or the fault of corrupt and inefficient global south governments at worst.

Civil society, communities and organisers are exposing how debt has been used to exploit and extract over the last century. From colonial powers forcing countries into debt at the point of independence, to allowing corporations like BlackRock to continue to make huge profits from debt repayments today, we can’t fight today's debt crisis without understanding its roots.

Lower income country debt is a legacy of colonialism and a tool for those in power to maintain a system of extraction and exploitation.

  • DESCRIPTION
The climate emergency is fuelling the accumulation of debt in countries in the global south. While having contributed very little to it, countries suffering from the impacts of climate change are facing more expensive borrowing costs because of their climate vulnerabilities, and are left with almost no option but to borrow to finance climate mitigation and adaptation, and to fund reconstruction and recovery after a climate extreme event. Furthermore, climate finance, that should respond to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, is being delivered mainly through loans and debt creating modalities, putting the financial burden on the shoulders of the global south.

The need to transition globally towards a more sustainable and equitable economy will not be possible without sustainable, responsible, fair and non-debt creating climate finance, as well as finance for transition that does not exacerbate debt vulnerabilities in the global south.

Reject false solutions! We demand debt cancellation NOW!

As the G7 held their annual meeting in the UK last June 2021, APMDD held debt actions in the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh to raise anew the global call for debt cancellation. The meeting of G20 finance ministers from July 9-10 only reiterated the G7 positions of promoting limited, temporary and meager debt relief solutions and peddling more debts, while remaining silent on dire conditions in middle-income countries excluded from these schemes. With peoples of the South facing deeper debt burdens in the coming years, without adequate public health support and facing ever-intensifying climate change, debt cancellation grows even more urgent. It is a vital step for peoples’ survival from COVID-19 and the multiple crises.
