CSO letter: Fossil fuel profit taxation and agenda of the next ECOFIN meeting

Civil society call on the Irish Finance Minister to put the issue of fossil fuel profit taxation on the agenda of the next Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) meeting on 18-19 September, as already requested by six Member States: Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, Spain and Portugal.

A Race to the Bottom: new EU ‘Tax Omnibus’ rolls back anti-tax abuse rules but maintains the broken and outdated tax system

  • Civil Society actors warn that new measures announced today will undermine fair taxation by slashing anti-abuse rules and make a bad EU tax system even worse

  • By sticking to the flawed transfer pricing system, the European Commission fails to propose any fundamental reforms that could have led to real simplification and improvements

  • As the EU seems to have given up on modernising the archaic international tax rules, the negotiation of a new UN Tax Convention is the viable path towards a fair, coherent and effective system

2026: Striving for justice in an age of self-interest

In a world increasingly marked by self-interest and the dominance of power over principle, it is hard to be optimistic. However, our collective struggles last year led to some victories, and 2026 presents plenty of opportunities to overcome this peak era of imperialism.
