Fifty days ahead of the 4th UN Financing for Development Conference (FfD4), a coalition of nine EU NGOs are launching the campaign “Era of Justice” to show how the multiple crises our world is living are deeply interconnected and to call on governments to take decisive action.
Debt Justice
Today’s governance of sovereign debt has contributed to wave after wave of debt distress, undermining countries’ ability to fulfill their human rights obligations, pursue development and climate goals, and combat inequalities.
Jubilee 2025: Turn debt into hope
What is Jubilee 2025?
2025 is a pivotal year to deliver on debt justice. Delivering on solutions to the global south debt crisis is the main goal of the global campaign “Jubilee 2025: Turn debt into hope”.
Pope Francis pronounced 2025 as the Jubilee Year of Hope. In a powerful appeal, he urged wealthy nations to “acknowledge the gravity of so many of their past decisions and determine to forgive the debts of countries that will never be able to repay them,” emphasising that cancelling the debt isn’t about charity, it’s about justice. He also called for the recognition of ecological debts. However, this call isn’t just for the Catholic Church - it’s already becoming a global debt justice movement.
25 years ago, the Jubilee 2000 campaign mobilised millions of people across the world to demand debt relief for the world’s most impoverished and indebted countries. It ended up being one of the most successful campaigns in civil society mobilisation history and was pivotal in cancelling more than US$130 billion of debt in 36 low-income countries. Could this be repeated? Let’s join forces to deliver on debt justice in 2025!
The campaign's activities will run throughout the Jubilee year 2025, until January 6, 2026.
The Jubilee 2025 debt campaign
The Jubilee 2025 campaign is supported by a broad coalition of civil society, including faith-based groups and non-religious organisations and movements, who believe that no country should be forced to choose between repaying debt and caring for its people or the planet.
Caritas Internationalis, a global network of Catholic organisations, launched a Jubilee debt justice campaign, “Turn Debt Into Hope”, for 2025. The campaign brings together communities around the world under a shared vision: to end the crushing burden of unsustainable debt and reclaim hope for a just and dignified future.
The Jubilee campaign is taking place in over 160 countries and seeks to mobilise grassroots activists, national organisations, and international networks worldwide around a shared vision of debt justice.
Many organisations are setting up their national campaigns around three joint asks:
- Stop the debt crisis now by cancelling and remedying unjust and unsustainable debts, without economic policy conditions
- Prevent debt crises from happening again by addressing their root causes, reforming the global financial system to prioritise people and the planet
- Establish a permanent, transparent, binding and comprehensive debt framework within the United Nations
Help us disseminate the petition on social media under #Jubilee2025 #FfD4 #CancelTheDebt #DebtJustice #TurnDebtIntoHope #CancelDebtChoseHope.
Organisations joining the campaign can also add national advocacy asks, such as government accountability, national calls to support debt legislation, or transparency in public spending, amongst others.
Eurodad supports this global effort. You can do it too by signing the petition!
